Four Things I Love Right Now
Some days I love old men wearing hats or babies who have no hair. Some days I love trees alive with pink blossoms, or the foam on the edges of ocean waves, or the moonrise.
Some days I love things. Like today.

1. Today I'm counting down the days until Spring officially arrives (only 9 more to go!) on the 2008 Pentagram Typography calendar, celebrating the fonts of Matthew Carter. In 1977, Carter re-designed one of my favorite fonts, Cochin, which I use in everything. The font for March (above) is called Sophia, which was modeled after sixth-century engravings on ecclesiastical metalwork. Mmm.

2. Today I'm tired of all the sniping and snarling, but I'm keeping the faith with this bright yellow Obama screen print by Blu Lima. What did I ever do before Etsy?

3. Today I felt the need for extra inspiration, so I skipped through the beautiful mind of Maira Kalman, in the pages of her book The Principles of Uncertainty. Page 292: I would love you to come to my party. It will be on a Sunday afternoon. Let's avoid a nighttime party. Who can stand the night? Not I.

4. Today I looked at these Black Calypso Beans from Rancho Gordo and thought: how shockingly beautiful. I scooped them up and let them slip through my fingers. They'll make a wonderful supper dressed with fruity green olive oil and minced rosemary.

oh my, that calendar is cool.

Oh - i'll play.
I love to travel - discovering new places, trying new foods, challenging yourself to communicate without speaking the language.
I love reading - there are so many books and so little time. I especially love the classics that everybody has heard of but no one reads anymore.
I love food - ok maybe I mentioned that already but travel or no travel I love to cook and I love to eat. I don't love weight gain and I don't love exercise class so this love and I have a long standing battle.
I love reading great blogs!

Those ARE good little things to love! And those beans are amazing - very graphic, like the calendar and your new Obama print. They certainly would look terrific all cooked up and presented with a bit of colour on a white plate.
What do I love today? Litte hints of spring - like pussywillows and green shoots poking out from gardens. Bouquets of pink and red tulips being sold at my local grocery store. The soundtrack for Julie Taymor's film, Across the Universe.

I love you

I love fonts. I have about 14K of them. (What can I say: besides babysitting, my first professional gig was as a calligrapher. And then I got a Mac and it was off to the races.)
I love babies. Babies are church. No matter what kind of horrible day I am having, if I get to play with a baby, it's all erased.
I love the lens on my Nikon D200: an f/1.8 50mm lens....great for food, faces, flowers, and intimate, heartful looks into the soul of whatever I'm seeing.
I love chickens and I love eggs.
I love that Logan's mother is a floral designer, and that our house is always filled with fresh flowers. Right now, I'm looking at a bowlful of red roses with red tulips, and the gentle, curved lines of the tulips stems as they bend down.
I love laughing in the middle of crying. It's a very high state of being.
I love cheese. But you knew that.
XOX from cloudy Soquel.

I love the many trees in bloom, shocking pink and white and yellow blossoms that release different sweet perfumes at different times of day.
I love Reese's warm belly that she rolls over and exposes for rubbing as she huddles near the hallway heater unit, tail wagging frantically.
I love fresh flowers in the house, a burst of living color to brighten the place up.
I love sneaking in the occasional round of Scrabulous on Facebook during the workday. :-)
I love napping. I can think of nothing more luxurious.

Speaking of Obama, I loved the profile of his mom in the NY Times today.
I also love:
- the clear smell after a thunderstorm
- wilted kale with garlic and soy sauce
- pebble beaches with craggy caves (and tide pools!)

It has been so much fun to read about what everyone loves. Thanks for playing along, y'all!
Mavis - Mmm, the thrill of adventure, either on the page or in person... love it.
Susanna - I have that soundtrack too. I think the Beatles music will always be fabulous, even in a 100 years.
Tana - is there anything better than a house filled with fresh flowers?
Sean - napping: the ultimate guilty pleasure.
Leah - thanks for the tip on the article - I scurried over and read it. Awesome. Now where can I find a pebble beach?
